Tassia is the name of the most recent known mokogodo Maasai hunter who dwelled in the local caves in the 1950s. Tassia rock kopje was a favorite hunting ground for those last Yaku speaking hunters who made spears of the iron ore found around and hid in the mud wallows below the lodge waiting the elephant to drink then leaping out spearing them with their poisoned spears. This is the land of true worriers and hunter gatherers. This connection to the land and their ancient tribal culture runs rich in the Mokogodo blood. It’s culturally fascinating and here you can experience and learn how these people survived to be the last Maasai left in Laikipia. Walking and learning medicinal purposes of the trees and learning their art of fire making a wood carving metal work as well as beading with the women and visiting their real homesteads are a liberating and humbling experience as well as scaling mountain tops to be retold stories of fierce tribal battles where their right to belong was marked.
This land and this lodge belongs to the mokogodo Maasai people and Tassia is a truly unique experience in that your giving back to enrich a future heritage by coming to enjoy this brilliant beautiful and awe inspiring place where people live so at one among nature and in doing so continue to protect the flora and fauna of this diverse and rich environment. Being here with Martin enriches this experience with his knowledge experience and expertise on the culture and nature of this land having lived here most of his life and partly bringing up his children here.
