‘The Journey is the destination’ we love this quote and so do those who like to travel. With our light and stylish camps we choose comfort and simplicity in a way that only the most artful campers know. With this kind of safari you can enjoy both the journey and a diverse and otherwise unobtainable destination. We were raised on safari and we bring along what we have learnt for you.
Our camps are made up of the living tent a canvas strung between the trees, with carpeted floors, a low seating area for reading and painting, or learning more about what you’ve seen in our library of wildlife and reference books.
Behind is an open air kitchen with pantry trunks, cooler boxes and freezer. A wood burning oven and an open fire.
We provide three course meals cooked on the campfire or in the earth fire oven. You will have all the fresh fruits and vegetables you could desire. We cater to your preferences, creating favoured dishes,, topped off with the best wines. Chilled drinks and snacks are always on offer.
Coming in late after a morning walk or drive, we will serve brunches. A light fresh lunch with an assortment of salads and some of our other specialties. We provide snacks and drinks in the vehicles for drives as well as in our backpack on walks.
The dining tables are set in the shade of a tree or under the stars, with space in the mess tent to dine in as well. Hammocks are strung between the trees and if by a river, we design a special bathing area, we also always travel with our camp swing which kids enjoy.
At the end of the day on a walking safari, or a photographic safari we return to camp. Dusty and golden, filled with the awe and celebrations of what we have seen that day in the wilderness.
The tents can either be ‘mosquito domes’ with both doubles and singles available. These are net tents allowing for upmost coolness in the arid areas and are best for star gazing. They are lightweight and easy to mobilize with, especially for walking safaris.
Our mobile Glamping gear consists of belle tents, good for the colder climates or for those who want a little more privacy and luxury. With mattresses set on carpeted floors, bedside torch lamps and all the other amenities needed.
Each tent is made up with luxury mattresses, cotton sheets and down feather duvet and pillows for utmost comfort. Cotton towels are provided next to a sink and mirror outside and you’ll find a piping hot shower slung over a tree, hidden in the bush behind your tent, with all toiletries provided. The bush loo is a pit dug under a mobile toilet seat positioned for privacy. It’s styled brilliantly and thought out for your upmost comfort. You’ll be refreshed at the end of each day with a hot shower and sleep comes easy in these conditions.
We have a star-link WiFi for those that must be connected, although it is best be absorbed by and immersed in the surroundings. Join us around the campfire to sip whiskey and recount stories with plenty of laughter and the sounds of the African night.
Where do we go on these safaris? The options are many, but we have our favorites. These are the places we have raised our children. Tassia, Meru and Kitich, kiwayu, Shaba to name a few, all in northern Kenya, unique off the beaten path paradises or into the cool mountains of Mt Kenya and the Aberdare range or to the idylic island and sea.
For the fishing itineraries, Mt Kenya has numerous beautiful lakes, tarns and rivers. With brown and rainbow trout. The Aberdare mountains also has numerous streams and rivers, and our favorite Hygania camp in the moss forests, with the Honi river below to adventure along. Kitich has a clear stream running through the forest from the mountains above the surrounding arid lands. The river has plenty of Barbul and Catfish. Beautiful walks and mesmerizing views, all in a warm setting and surrounded by the wildest animals and brilliant bird life.
For the walking safaris, we can take you on ridge walks, from the upper slopes of Mount Kenya, to the Mukogodo forest and the other isolated mountain ranges scattered in the north. Or walks in the flatter lower lands where wildlife is plentiful and culture is rich. Or we can link in with Charlie Wheeler’s camel assisted walking safaris, which begin in Lewa wildlife Conservancy and end at Tassia. Camping on rocky kopjies, sandy dry river beds next to waterfalls, or under the canopy of shaded Newtonia and acacia trees. Wildlife all around and a day of walking ahead. It’s a wild venture all in great comfort and style. Best to look at our itinerary’s and choose your preferred personalized safari.
